Many people experience the common but uncomfortable sensation of bloating.
Many people experience the common but uncomfortable sensation of bloating. It is typified by an abdominal sensation of fullness, constriction, frequently accompanied by gas and flatulence. Chronic bloating may be a sign of underlying health problems, while occasional bloating is just very frustrating and a sign of digestive weakness. Managing and avoiding this discomfort can be made easier by being aware of the causes of bloating.
Digestion problems like indigestion, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are among the main causes of bloating. Inadequate digestion can cause food to fermentation of food in the digestive tract, which results in bloating and gas production.
Swallowing air while eating or drinking, especially quickly or through the use of straws, carbonated drinks, can introduce excess air into the digestive system, causing bloating. Additionally, certain foods high in fibre, such as beans, lentils, and cruciferous vegetables, can produce gas during digestion, leading to bloating.
Individuals with lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity may experience bloating after consuming dairy products or gluten-containing foods. These intolerances can cause digestive discomfort, including bloating, gas, and diarrhea.
Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women during menstruation or pregnancy, can lead to bloating. High sodium intake, dehydration, and certain medications can also contribute to fluid retention and bloating.
Conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Celiac disease can cause damage and inflammation in the digestive tract, leading to bloating, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Chronic stress can affect digestion and contribute to bloating. When stressed, the body’s natural digestive processes may slow down, leading to a buildup of gas and bloating.
Consuming large meals or eating too quickly can overwhelm the digestive system, leading to bloating. Additionally, eating rich, fatty foods can delay stomach emptying and contribute to bloating.
Practice mindful eating by chewing food slowly and thoroughly, avoiding talking while eating, and paying attention to hunger and fullness cues.
Identify and avoid trigger foods that commonly cause bloating, such as beans, onions, broccoli, cabbage, dairy products, and gluten-containing foods. Instead, opt for a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day (outside of meal time) to help prevent constipation and promote healthy digestion. Limiting alcohol and caffeine intake can also help reduce bloating.
Take a broad spectrum probiotic, or better still, find out what type of bacteria is inside your gut (good and bad) and then take a strain-specific probiotic. Book an appointment if you’d like to organise a gut reset and microbiome testing.
Engage in regular physical activity to promote bowel regularity and relieve bloating. Activities such as walking, jogging, yoga, and cycling can help stimulate digestion and alleviate gas.
Practice stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation to help improve digestion and reduce bloating.
Make an appointment with us for assessment and treatment if bloating continues. We can test your microbiome (stool test) to find out exactly what type of bacteria is inside your gut. Once we know this, we can go about changing it. Gut health is linked to so many positive outcomes. It’s the foundation of good health and wellbeing.
