A radiant, glowing complexion is often a reflection of what you consume.
While skincare products play a significant role, the foundation of healthy, glowing skin starts from within. Incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet can enhance your skin’s natural beauty.
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines help maintain skin’s elasticity and hydration, reducing inflammation and promoting a youthful glow. If a patient has acne, I prefer to incorporate omegas through diet initially, until the skin clears. Generally, I find this is more effective than adding in omega 3 fatty acid supplements which may be harder for the body to process.
Packed with healthy fats, vitamin E, and antioxidants, avocados nourish and moisturize the skin, keeping it supple and radiant.
Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals that protect the skin from oxidative stress and promote collagen production, resulting in a smoother complexion.
Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are powerhouse foods for skin health, packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as iron and antioxidants that help repair and rejuvenate the skin.
Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are excellent sources of essential fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin E, which promote skin repair, reduce inflammation, and maintain skin’s moisture levels.
Rich in beta-carotene, sweet potatoes are converted into vitamin A in the body, essential for promoting skin cell turnover, preventing dryness, and enhancing skin tone.
Bursting with lycopene, tomatoes protect the skin from UV damage, reduce inflammation, and promote collagen production, leading to smoother, firmer skin.
Loaded with antioxidants called catechins, green tea helps protect the skin from sun damage, improve skin elasticity, and reduce redness and inflammation, resulting in a clearer complexion.
Indulge in moderation with dark chocolate containing at least 80% cocoa, which is rich in antioxidants that improve blood flow to the skin, hydrate the skin, and protect against sun damage, resulting in a healthier glow. No/low sugar is really important.
Incorporating these skin-loving foods into your diet can complement your skincare routine and promote a radiant complexion from the inside out. Remember to hydrate well, limit processed foods and sugar, and maintain a balanced diet for optimal skin health. With the right nutrients, your skin can shine with natural luminosity. Beyond diet, it’s also important to consider the gut-skin connection. Imbalances in the gut microbiome can drive inflammation and contribute to breakouts, making microbiome testing a valuable tool in uncovering hidden triggers. By identifying and addressing bacterial imbalances, treatment can be personalised to restore gut harmony, reduce systemic inflammation, and ultimately support clearer, healthier skin. Hormones will also need to be balanced in order to have clear skin.
