Gua Sha is an ancient healing practice that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries.
Originally developed to improve circulation and relieve tension, it has become increasingly popular today for both skin health and overall wellness. But what exactly is Gua Sha, how does it work, and what benefits can it offer?
Gua Sha involves using a smooth-edged tool often made from jade, rose quartz, or buffalo horn – to gently scrape or stroke the skin. While it can be performed on the face for cosmetic benefits, it’s also used on the body to address muscle tension, improve circulation, and support lymphatic drainage.
The term “Gua” means to scrape or rub, and “Sha” refers to the light redness that appears on the skin as blood circulation is stimulated. This temporary redness is a sign that the technique is activating blood flow and promoting healing.
The benefits of Gua Sha come from its effects on the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems:
Improved Blood Circulation: Gua Sha gently moves blood to the surface of the skin, increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to cells.
Lymphatic Drainage: By guiding fluid movement, it helps remove toxins and excess fluid, reducing puffiness and promoting a clearer complexion.
Muscle Relaxation: Scraping along tense muscles releases adhesions and tightness, reducing soreness and tension headaches.
Stimulation of Collagen: On the face, regular Gua Sha can enhance skin elasticity, support firmness, and give a natural, healthy glow.
For Skin: Improves complexion, reduces puffiness, enhances lymphatic drainage, and may help smooth fine lines over time.
For Muscles & Pain: Relieves tension, eases sore muscles, improves flexibility, and may reduce inflammation.
For Stress & Wellness: Offers a calming, meditative experience that can help lower stress and support overall wellbeing.
Tools Needed:
A Gua Sha tool (jade, rose quartz, or similar)
Facial oil, serum, collagen face mask, or thick moisturiser, for smooth gliding
Facial Gua Sha:
Cleanse your face and apply a nourishing facial oil.
Hold the tool at a 15-30° angle to the skin.
Gently stroke upward and outward, starting from the neck, jawline, cheeks, and forehead.
Use light to medium pressure – avoid dragging the skin harshly.
Repeat each stroke 3-5 times, focusing on areas of tension.
Finish by gently massaging lymph nodes near your ears and collarbone.
Use 2–3 times per week for best results, or daily on the face if comfortable.
Gua Sha is more than a beauty trend – it’s a holistic technique that combines circulation, lymphatic support, and mindful self-care. When practiced consistently, it can improve skin health, relieve tension, and support overall wellness.
